Our team is comprised of a diverse mix of nationalities, many of whom have been working with us for many years. In addition to our management team, we have a team of supervisors and team leaders who manage up to 700 highly motivated staff who grow, pick and pack the fruit.
We promote multiculturalism and pride ourselves on the positive reputation we have for our workplace being happy and harmonious.
As part of our commitment to building a consistent team at Queensland Berries, Queensland Berries has connected with the Australian Government Aid Initiative to employ seasonal workers through the Pacific Australian Labour Mobility (PALM).
In 2020 Queensland Berries became an Approved Employer and now proudly sponsors staff from the Solomon Islands, Tonga and Timor-Leste.
A strong division of Queensland Berries is its supportive welfare team which provides one-on-one support that covers all facets of daily living.
The recruitment process is coordinated by our PALM Manager and includes in-country interviews facilitated by the Labour Sending Units of each country. Staff are interviewed face to face and then offered a position with the company to join our team. Pre-departure briefings and support are provided to the successful applicants. On arrival to Australia, our Support and well-being team welcomes our new recruits at the Brisbane International Airport.
Workers undergo a comprehensive training program which includes an introduction to local services, advice about how to stay healthy, working well in a team with workers of multiple nationalities and WHS and workplace processes. Once the training is completed our HR manager ensures each staff member is placed in the most suitable role which varies from picking and packing our berries, maintenance work, tractor driving or a team leader.
Our caring and sympathetic Support Team ensures all staff feel comfortable and assisted with adjusting to new foods, homesickness, diet, climate, shared accommodation, and work.
The PALM programme is vital for the stability of our business. It ensures our workforce requirements are met when there is not enough local Australian labour available. Equally important is that our company is able to offer opportunities to our Pacific Island and Timorese neighbours by providing an income, workplace training and a positive horticultural experience that can contribute to the economic development of their lives when they return home.
